Spanish Adverbs of Place

Adverbios de lugar: position, direction and reference points

Spanish uses different words depending on whether you are talking about a place, a direction, or a location in relation to another object. The key is not only the word itself, but also whether it is followed by de.

The Most Important Rule

WHERE?

Position / Location

Use these forms when something is located in relation to another thing. When you mention the reference object, Spanish usually uses de.

  • delante de la casa
  • detrás del sofá
  • dentro de la mochila
  • cerca de aquí
WHERE TO?

Direction / Movement

Use these forms when the idea is movement, direction, or a general area. They often stand alone or work with movement verbs.

  • sigue adelante
  • da un paso atrás
  • sal afuera
  • sube arriba

Simple memory trick

de normally introduces a reference point: delante de la casa, dentro de la caja. Directional words like adelante, atrás, afuera and adentro often describe movement or orientation.
