Expressing the Maximum Degree

Superlatives are used to express the maximum degree of a quality. In Spanish, there are two main types to master: Relative and Absolute.

Superlativo Relativo

The most / The least (in a group)

Used to highlight something in comparison to a specific group. It identifies the "number one" within a category.

el / la / los / las + más / menos + adjetivo + de

Juan es el más alto de la clase.

Juan is the tallest in the class.

Esta película es la menos interesante de todas.

This movie is the least interesting of all.

Ellos son los más rápidos del equipo.

They are the fastest on the team.

Superlativo Absoluto

Extremely / Super / Very

Used to express a quality at its absolute maximum degree, without any direct comparison to a group.

adjetivo + -ísimo / -ísima / -ísimos / -ísimas

El examen fue dificilísimo.

The exam was extremely difficult.

La casa es hermosísima.

The house is incredibly beautiful.

Los niños están contentísimos.

The children are super happy.

⚠️ Spelling Rules for "-ísimo"

When adding the -ísimo suffix, adjectives ending in certain letters undergo spelling changes to maintain their pronunciation.

c → qu

Rico → Riquísimo

(Extremely delicious/rich)

g → gu

Largo → Larguísimo

(Extremely long)

z → c

Feliz → Felicísimo

(Extremely happy)

Irregular Relative Superlatives

Just like comparatives, the adjectives bueno, malo, grande, and pequeño have irregular superlative forms. Never use "el más bueno" or "el más malo."

El mejor / La mejor

The best

Este restaurante es el mejor de la ciudad.

This restaurant is the best in the city.

El peor / La peor

The worst

Ese servicio fue el peor de todos.

That service was the worst of all.

El mayor / La mayor

The oldest / The greatest

Mi hermano es el mayor de la familia.

My brother is the oldest in the family.

El menor / La menor

The youngest / The least

Ella es la menor de sus hermanas.

She is the youngest of her sisters.
